Rolling with the Punches

And for your next installment of “Everything with Kendall changes day to day, sometimes hour by hour, from what we were expecting,” Kendall was NOT admitted to the hospital yesterday. He had a long day at the hospital (well, actually two hospitals) getting yet another a COVID test (negative), a pulmonary function test (lung capacity within normal levels), labs (hemoglobin low so will be getting another blood transfusion early tomorrow morning), a PICC dressing change, and then a long appointment with his head hematologist (that he had to wait an hour an a half for). Kendall was supposed to be admitted right after that appointment, and the hospital even called him to say they had his hospital room all ready for him.

However, his doctor was very concerned with how weak Kendall still is (she was shocked when she saw him come in in a wheelchair) and didn’t think he would be able to stand another intense full course of chemotherapy right now. One of the doctors felt that Kendall should go to a rehabilitation center, but in the end it was decided that the risk of COVID was too great so he will be home for another week to hopefully get stronger. The plan is for Kendall to do more physical therapy sessions through home health each week, and he’ll also be taking a daily oral chemo drug to hopefully keep the leukemia at bay. Kendall does show more weakness on his left side, so they will also need to rule out neurological factors.

This delay wasn’t the greatest news, but we decided to celebrate the fact that Kendall gets to be home a bit longer with treats and a family movie night. With COVID cases currently so high, I will no longer be allowed to visit him when he is admitted, so we’re making the most of this time together now. We’re also really enjoying getting to have Grandma Jeanne here. Aren’t Kendall and his mom cute?

Steroids sure make your face puffy.
